Our contribution to PyWeek #7

PyWeek #7 was held from September 7th to 14th second time this year. This time the winner theme was: ""The length of a piece of string". Our basic idea was to place the player in the role of a garbage collector which collects unused memory chains(strings) into a longer chain which later can be freed at specific locations. The game controls are pretty straightforward: you can navigate in the main menu with the cursor keys or with the mouse. Pressing the ESC key either returns to the main menu or quits from the program if pressed in the menu. Because nobody ever reads the documentation we decided not to complicate things too much. You can select between four programming languages each with different difficultly level you want collecting garbage in:

• Python
• C
• C++
• Assembly

Collecting garbage is simple: control the head of the list with the mouse and the descendant elements will follow. If your garbage chain's head collides with a free chain's head then the free chain will be appended to yours. If a free chain isn't collected in a specified amount of time it disappears and counts as a memory leak so you have to be quick. If you run out of memory then it's game over! As your list grows longer controling it is getting more and more difficult. There are garbage collecting points where collected elements can be dropped and traded for points. Collected memory is freed thus decreasing memory usage. If all allocated memory are freed you win! Care should be taken though because there are bad memory chains. Collecting them will also cause memory leak. Bad memory chains are easily distinguishable from ordinary ones because they are grey shaded.
